Choker Necklaces – between delicate lace and striking aesthetics
Hardly any accessory changes a look with so little effort as a choker necklace. Worn close to the neck, it draws attention to the neck, face, and décolleté, appearing romantic, elegant, playful, or deliberately provocative depending on its design. Jewellery worn tightly around the neck is much older than modern fashion terms might suggest. Necklaces and close-fitting jewellery appear in different historical eras and cultures. In European fashion, the choker became particularly prominent in the 19th century: velvet ribbons, pearls, and decorative elements were worn close to the neck and were, for a time, part of elegant women's fashion.
Later, its meaning changed repeatedly. In the 20th century, the choker appeared in both glamorous jewellery variations and subcultural looks. Punk, Gothic, and alternative fashion made the necklace darker and edgier; in the 1990s, slim chokers finally returned as a widely visible fashion trend.
Precisely for this reason, the accessory still has no single fixed meaning today. A black lace choker can appear romantic and almost Victorian, evoke Gothic aesthetics, or be deliberately staged as sensual. In fetish and kink contexts, a tightly worn necklace can also have its own symbolic meaning. However, this is always dependent on personal context – a choker alone says nothing definitive about its wearer.
Today, it is precisely this interplay with different style worlds that is interesting. One and the same lace necklace can appear playful with a dirndl, elegant with a black dress, and significantly more provocative with a more revealing outfit.
